New Zealand to Singapore
We depart New Zealand, arriving early evening in Singapore and check into our hotel.
Singapore - Known as “the crossroads of the world” Singapore has become a popular stopover destination when travelling to Europe. Singapore is a thriving modern city with an appealing range of attractions and activities. The day is free to enjoy the sights or a chance to do some shopping!
Singapore, Frankfurt, Dubrovnik - Our overnight flight departs Singapore late evening; we have a short stop in Frankfurt before continuing to Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik (D) On arrival in Dubrovnik, we will be taken directly to our hotel which is located in the picturesque district of Lapad, right on the dazzling shores of the Adriatic!
Dubrovnik (B, D) This morning we will discover the heart of this World Heritage city with a walking tour of the old fortified town which dates from the 13th century. Dubrovnik is a mesmerizing labyrinth of steep streets, hidden squares and magnificent architecture from its Byzantine, Venetian and Hungarian past as we visit the Bell Clock Tower, the 15th century Orlando’s Column, Sponza Palace, the Rector’s Palace, the Domincan Monastery and also Franciscan Monastery with its pharmacy, one of the oldest in the world! A free afternoon to continue your discovery of Dubrovnik’s enchanting churches, palaces, shops, cafes and restaurants, enjoy a relaxing dip at the hotel pool or the balmy waters of the Adriatic or experience jaw-dropping views from Mt Srd’s new cable car!
Dubrovnik (B, D) Today we visit one of the southernmost points of Croatia and the charming resort town of Cavtat. Originally the Greek settlement of Epidauros, Cavtat became an important seaport and Roman colony. Today it is known for the breathtaking beauty of its coastal setting and its many historic monuments; the city walls, the Rector’s Palace, the Baroque Church of St Nikola, the Franciscan Monastery, the Sipun Cave and the Racic Mausoleum designed by famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
Dubrovnik to Split (B, D) Leaving Dubrovnik today, we travel north along the spectacular coast stopping at the picturesque harbour town of Makasarka which is brimming with photo opportunities as well as fashionable shops, cafes and restaurants. We arrive early afternoon in the lively city of Split. Our comfortable hotel is centrally located at the foothills of the famous Marjan hill.
Split (B, D) This morning we take an easy walking tour of the highlights of Split. Split is a busy port and a perfect gateway to explore the dramatic coast and islands of Croatia. Split was chosen by Roman Emperor Diocletian to build a palace for his retirement. Within its walls are structures of many historical periods for us to visit including Roman heritage, Jupiter’s Temple, Renaissance and Gothic architecture, the Peristyle and the Cathedral. A free afternoon is to relax, take a stroll along the Esplanade, visit the nearby ruins of Solin or enjoy spectacular views of Split from the steps of Marjun.
Split (B, D) A beautiful bridge links the medieval city of Trogir to the mainland and is an ideal day trip from Split. A World Heritage city since 1989, Trogir boasts a rich heritage of Greek, Roman and Venetian culture over 2300 years, as well as delighting visitors with exciting cultural treasures, lovely restaurants and one of the best open air markets!
Split, Plitvice Lakes, Opatja (B, D) Today we travel through varied countryside, forest and wild rugged gorges until we reach the incredible World Heritage listed Plitvice Lakes – a natural phenomenon of rare and unique beauty. We walk through pathways and on wooden promenades to view the breathtaking scenery as 16 crystal blue lakes cascade into 92 plunging waterfalls! Surrounded by dense forests, the pristine lakes are home to 160 species of birds and a variety of wildlife including otters, badgers and even the occasional bear! After lunch at the Lakes (own cost), we continue north west to the quaint and colourful Istrian town of Opatja.
Opatja (B, D) A free day to soak up the relaxed resort atmosphere of Opatja! Stroll, browse, shop and eat at the waterfront cafes and boutiques, then soak up some serious relaxation in the warm waters of the Kvarmer Gulf. Set between lush green hills and the sparkling blue waters of the Adriatic, Opatja offers superb scenery, climate, parks, hotels, historic villas, beaches and a seaside promenade as well as a plethora of festivals, concerts, exhibitions and sporting events throughout the year.
Opatja, Pula, Rovinj (B, D) Rested and refreshed, we travel to Pula where a superbly preserved 1st century amphitheatre is adjacent to the harbour. Once the scene of Roman gladiator fights, medieval fairs and knights’ tournaments, it now provides an incomparable venue for Pula’s Film Festival, Equestrian Festival, concerts and the opera season. Later in the day we follow the Istrian Peninsula to reach the seaside town of Rovinj.
Rovinj (B, D) Today is a free day to enjoy yourself amid the cobblestone charm of Rovinj. The streets and squares of the Venetian Quarter house artists’ studios and curio shops that beg to be explored and the busy market has fresh produce, delicacies and souvenirs. The steep terraces of pretty stone houses lead you to the needle-like campanile of St Euphemia and impressive views of the peninsula from the Cathedral.
Rovinj, Postonja, Lake Bled (B,D) Today we enter Slovenia and make a stop at Postonja’s incredible caves. The 2 million year old, 27km long subterranean system is Europe’s biggest cave and is justifiably world famous since opening 188 years ago! We begin our visit with the cave train - a 2km miniature train ride and then continue on foot to see the dazzling calcite formations which are explained by a local guide. Late in the afternoon we continue to Lake Bled - our hotel in the heart of Bled has wonderful views across the picturesque lake with its island and medieval cliff-top castle.
Lake Bled (B, D)Our day begins with a visit to Castle Bled which is situated high above the lake. Originally designed as an impenetrable fortress against invaders, the castle now houses a modern museum. The rest of the day is free to take in the views and the natural beauty of Lake Bled – fantastic photo opportunities! As one of Slovenia’s most beautiful alpine resorts it is renowned for its healing climate, thermal lake water, sun, serenity and fresh mountain air.
Lake Bled (B) A free day to explore and enjoy this stunning area. Take a leisurely stroll around the lake (takes about one and a half hours), perhaps a boat trip across the lake to the island to visit the enchanting island church or sample the local delicacies from the café overlooking the lake.
Lake Bled, Ljubljana (B, D) Today we journey through some of the most picturesque scenery in Europe on our way to Ljubljana - a traveller’s delight! We see the elegant City Hall, Three Bridges and take the funicular to Ljubljana Castle, with impressive views across the city. A free afternoon to explore the pedestrian streets, visit the market or relax and enjoy the surroundings in one of the canal side cafes. Our hotel is situated in the heart of the city, central to many of the major sites.
Ljubljana, Zagreb (B, D) We have a free morning, then after lunch (own cost) we leave Ljubljana and drive to Croatia’s capital, Zagreb. Following arrival at the hotel, there is time to relax or explore nearby historic streets and buildings if you wish. Zagreb is divided into 3 areas; the upper town which incorporates the oldest “fairytale” part of the city, the lower town where shops, restaurants, cafes and theatres are located and “new Zagreb” with its high rise commercial hub.
Zagreb (B D) Today we enjoy a walking tour of historic Zagreb which takes in the Croatian Parliament, museums and galleries. Of special note is St Mark’s Church featuring an ornate interior and vibrant ceramic roof tiles. A free afternoon to continue your exploration of this “fairytale” city.
Zagreb (B, D) Today we visit the authentically restored castle at Trakoscan, just a short drive from Zagreb. Set in stunning countryside, the views from the castle towers are outstanding. We continue to the pretty town of Varazdin, considered “Croatia’s Vienna.” Once the flourishing Baroque Capital of Croatia, Varazdin was home to wealthy nobles, musicians and artisans. Today it is one of the best preserved medieval towns with a cultural history spanning 8 centuries. There’s time for lunch (own cost) and an independent wander through its charming medieval streets and cultural heritage.
Zagreb, Frankfurt, Singapore, New Zealand (B) Reluctantly, we bid farewell to Zagreb to start our journey home.
